One of the things I love about a fall wedding at the 1812 Hitching Post is that your guests aren’t just coming to a wedding—they’re getting a chance to experience a little piece of North Carolina.
Fall is actually the most popular season for day trips to North Carolina. In the Piedmont, fall was the most popular season for overnight visitors in recent years, ahead of the other seasons.
We’re surrounded by the Brushy Mountains, Lake Norman, vineyards, historic towns and some wonderfully quirky places that you simply won’t find everywhere. If your family and friends are traveling in for the wedding, here are a few ideas for what they can do while they’re here.
1. Saddle Up in Love Valley
Just north of Statesville, you’ll find one of the area’s most unexpected little treasures: Love Valley, a Western-themed community tucked into the foothills of the Brushy Mountains.
There are dirt streets, hitching posts, horses and a real Old West atmosphere. Love Valley is especially active from spring through Halloween, with rodeos, horse-and-wagon events, concerts and other equestrian activities. You can also arrange horseback riding if you’re feeling adventurous.
If you’re in town for a wedding the weekend of October 25, here’s a fun one for your list: the fifth annual Ranch Rodeo in Love Valley.
Just north of Statesville, Love Valley is a little different from most places you’ll visit around here. It’s a tiny Western-themed community in the foothills of the Brushy Mountains, where dirt roads, horses, hitching rails and old-West-style buildings give the town its unmistakable cowboy character.
The Ranch Rodeo brings that Western spirit to life with an afternoon or evening around the arena, watching riders and ranch teams put their horsemanship and working-ranch skills to the test. And because Love Valley is a real horse-centered community rather than a manufactured Western attraction, it has a wonderfully authentic, down-home feel.
October 25 is also a great excuse to explore Love Valley while you’re there. Walk around the little Western town, take some photos, watch the horses, and enjoy the change of scenery before or after the rodeo. Love Valley’s events calendar is the best place to check for the latest event information as the date gets closer.
A little local connection: I was lucky enough to meet Andy Barker, the founder of Love Valley, when he attended a wedding at the 1812 Hitching Post about 20 years ago. At the time, I don’t think I fully appreciated what a wonderful piece of local history I was experiencing. Today, whenever I mention Love Valley to wedding guests, I love knowing that I once had the chance to meet the man who helped create this unique little western town just a short drive from us.
Wedding guest tip: If you’ve never been to Love Valley, don’t expect a large tourist attraction with shops and activities on every corner. It’s a small community, and what’s open can vary. The town really comes alive around its events, which is one reason a rodeo weekend is such a fun time to visit.
2. Visit a Working Water-Powered Mill
If you’ve never seen an old-fashioned water-powered grist mill actually operating, add Linney’s Water Mill in Union Grove to your list.
This family-operated mill sits along Rocky Creek and continues the tradition of grinding corn the old-fashioned way. There’s a mill store where you can pick up stone-ground grits, cornmeal and other country-store goodies.
It’s one of those places that doesn’t feel like a typical tourist attraction. It feels like you’ve stumbled across a piece of the North Carolina countryside that has simply kept doing what it has always done.
And yes—buy the grits. These are stone ground locally. They are on our catering menu!
3. Spend an Evening Downtown Statesville
Historic Downtown Statesville is a great place to wander without having to plan an entire day around it.
Grab a cup of coffee, browse the locally owned shops, check out the historic buildings and find somewhere to sit down for dinner or a drink. It’s particularly nice in the fall when the temperatures are cooler and you can take your time exploring.

4. Catch the Fall Art Crawl
If you’re visiting on September 19, 2026, you’re in luck.
Downtown Statesville’s Fall Art Crawl brings artists into galleries, shops and businesses throughout downtown. It’s a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon wandering around, looking at art and discovering some of the local businesses you might otherwise drive right past.
This is especially nice for wedding guests because you can make it as casual as you like. Browse for an hour—or stay all afternoon.
5. Take a Fall Drive Through the Yadkin Valley
Fall is a beautiful time to explore the countryside west of Statesville.
The Yadkin Valley is home to numerous wineries, and a leisurely afternoon of vineyard views, wine tasting and lunch makes a wonderful grown-up outing for wedding guests who have a little extra time.
It’s also a nice way to see the landscape that makes this part of North Carolina so special.
6. Get Outside at Lake Norman State Park
Fall is made for getting outside.
Lake Norman State Park is a great place for guests who want a little fresh air before the wedding festivities begin. There are hiking and biking trails, picnic areas and beautiful lake scenery.
You don’t have to be an avid hiker, either. A leisurely walk and a picnic can be just the thing after a long drive.
7. Go On a Safari Adventure
Adults and children both love Zootastic Park in Troutman, NC. This is a unique North Carolina experience that offers a drive-through safari and walk-through animal experiences. This is an especially good option for guests looking for something to do with children before or after the wedding. It’s also great entertainment for those who are mobility impaired.
Plan for a car wash after your drive through trip to get the animal spit off your windows. 🙂
8. Visit Fort Dobbs
For the history buffs in your family, Fort Dobbs State Historic Site offers another glimpse into North Carolina’s past.
The reconstructed 18th-century fort tells the story of life on the North Carolina frontier during the French and Indian War. It’s close enough to Statesville to make an easy stop without turning your wedding weekend into a road trip.

9. Come for the Pumpkin Fest
If your wedding guests are staying into November, put Statesville Pumpkin Fest on the calendar.
The 2026 event is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, in Downtown Statesville and includes food, music, arts and crafts, a kids’ zone, pumpkin-themed activities and a classic-car cruise-in.
It’s a fun way to squeeze one more bit of fall into the weekend before everyone heads home.
10. See the balloons at Carolina BalloonFest
If the wedding weekend happens to coincide with BalloonFest the third weekend in October, your guests are in for a pretty spectacular bonus. Statesville is known as the “Ballooning Capital of the East,” and seeing a field filled with colorful hot-air balloons is one of those experiences that makes for a memorable fall weekend.
Make a Weekend of It
Your wedding may be the reason everyone comes to Statesville, but it doesn’t have to be the only thing they experience while they’re here.
Come a day early. Stay an extra night. Take a drive through the mountains. Visit a little Western town. Watch an old waterwheel turn. Taste wine in the Yadkin Valley. Wander through downtown with a cup of coffee.
Then gather everyone together at the 1812 Hitching Post and celebrate.
That’s the beauty of a wedding in the country—you get the wedding, and you get a little North Carolina adventure thrown in, too.
